In 2012, my girl scout troop began to tutor a refugee family from Congo. As mere ten-year olds, we were unsure of the impact we could make on their lives. This family had a total of 7 kids, including a 10 year old with special needs. We started tutoring them in reading, math and science, while simultaneously working on developing their English and social skills. Through our weekly sessions not only did we we build a relationship with these individuals, but were able to learn the true definitions of grit and curiosity. No matter how hard they struggled, they were determined to improve their academic skills and thrive in their schools. What I loved the most about this journey was our effect in being able to provide this family a sense of belonging in this new country. The memories I made with this family will forever leave an impact on my life. During the six months of working with this family, I realized my love for teaching and public service.
Big shout our to my girl scout troop leader, Reena Arya, for allowing us to realize tthat every one can make a difference no matter the age.
